To close out the full-band live session with Israel Portnoy, the Portnoy Brothers offered something deeply personal—a stripped-down, intimate rendition of the beloved Jewish classic “Candles.” Performed with just Israel and Mendy, this version feels like stepping into a warm family moment. As children, the brothers would sing this song with their father at Chanukah parties, and that nostalgia is woven into every note of this performance. Their harmonies, understated and sincere, bring out the heart of the song: gratitude, light, and the shared warmth of tradition.
“Candles” is often associated with Mordechai Ben David and Abie Rotenberg—two giants in Jewish music who helped cement its legacy. But the song was in fact written and composed by Abie Rotenberg, appearing on Unforgettable Moments, Vol. 2 (and earlier HASC albums). MBD’s celebrated rendition helped it reach even wider audiences, a beautiful example of how timeless Jewish songs travel between voices and generations.
In the hands of the Portnoy Brothers, “Candles” feels both familiar and new—an echo of childhood memories and a perfect soundtrack for the upcoming Chanukah season. This performance captures the essence of what makes the holiday so special: simplicity, light, family, and the melodies that connect us across time.
