The Yevanim tyrranized the Jewish people during the Bayis Sheini, seeking to cast them as just another nation, with no special connection to the God of the universe. They claimed the Torah of the Jews was not inherently different than their own science and philosophy.
After recapturing the Beis Hamikdash, the additional neis of the Menorah brought home to all that the Jewish people are indeed the Shoshanim, the special rose among the thorns, to whom them alone belongs the title of Banim Lamakom, inheritors of a Torah given to them directly from the mouth of Hashem.
"Like a rose among the thorns, so is my beloved among the nations!"
